The treatment of retinoblastoma is often dependent on each patient. Several variables must be taken into consideration by the participating physicians. The age of the child, if the cancer to other body regions like the brain or central nervous system, and if the retinoblastoma in one or both eyes treated than some of the issues presented, disseminated.
A lack of treatment would result in the apparent death of the child, and of course this is not a common option. Based on early diagnosis of retinoblastoma is the goal of treatment is different. Sometimes the goal is to save lives. At other times, the considerations are cosmetic, such as maintaining the appearance of the eye and face protection, or perhaps more importantly, keeping the vision, the eye or both eyes.
The treatment most commonly used for retinoblastoma is enucleation. Enucleation is a procedure in which the eye can be surgically removed so that cancer itself can be removed. The child will be euthanized and the eye is then removed. The intervention usually takes take less than an hour and is painless. In the vicinity of the eye, like the eyebrow and eyelid, not affected.
Children who know enucleation often return the same day. A ball made of plastic or rubber is placed where the original look was in order, there is no cavity. According to the orbit well healed, the child may then be considered for future revisions to the aesthetic appearance of the eyes, which seem better at first a bit like the skin under his lips.
The child may be given generally to the prosthesis three weeks after the operation. The prosthesis consists of a plastic material and is shaped by a technical artist, like others to see real child’s eyes.
